Desktop Commander vs Serena

By Sophie Filer · checked against both servers on 27 Oct 2026

Desktop Commander turns a chat app into a general coding agent: terminal, processes, file search and block edits. Serena makes an agent smarter about code: it uses language servers to find and edit symbols, so it reads less and lands edits more precisely. In Claude Desktop start with Desktop Commander; in a client that already has a terminal, add Serena.

Desktop Commander

A terminal, file search and surgical file edits for your assistant.

Serena

IDE-style "find symbol" and "edit symbol" for an agent, backed by language servers.

Pick Desktop Commander if

  • You want Claude Desktop to run builds, tests and scripts
  • You need long-running processes and their output
  • You work across folders, not just one codebase

Pick Serena if

  • Your codebase is big and reading whole files wastes context
  • You refactor and need every caller of a function
  • Your client already has a terminal but no code intelligence

Can you run both?

They complement each other well: Desktop Commander for the terminal, Serena for finding and editing code. Switch off Serena’s own shell tool so the assistant has one way to run commands.
