What is Nx MCP?

Nx MCP is the Nx team's server that gives an assistant your monorepo's project graph, running tasks, generators, Nx docs and Nx Cloud CI results.

The Nx team ships this server alongside Nx Console. Nx already knows how a monorepo fits together, and the server passes that on: which projects exist and depend on each other, what targets they have, which generators are available and what options they take, and the current Nx documentation. It can also show the output of tasks you are running in the terminal.

If the workspace uses Nx Cloud, the model can read the CI pipeline for your branch, pull the log of a failed task, and accept or reject a self-healing fix that Nx Cloud proposed. By default it starts in a minimal mode with only a few tools, because coding agents often learn the workspace through Nx skills instead.

MCP Shelf take

Nx needs something our Linux test machine does not have (an account, an app or a service), so on 27 Oct 2026 we read its source and counted 13 tools. 11 of the 13 only read; the other 2 can change things. It sits 18th of 21 in its category on our shelf by GitHub stars (1.4K).
MCP Shelf tests: numbers from our own runs, not the README · tested on 27 Oct 2026

What can Nx MCP read and change?

It can read

  • Your workspace's project graph, nx.json and project configuration
  • Output of Nx tasks running in your terminal
  • Nx Cloud CI results for your branch, if you use Nx Cloud

It can change

  • Self-healing fixes in Nx Cloud, when asked to apply or reject one
  • Your editor's view, when it opens the graph

Safer setup: Minimal mode is already small. Exclude update_self_healing_fix with --tools "!update_self_healing_fix" if you do not want the model to act on CI fixes.

What's in the pod

What tools does Nx MCP have?

We found 13 tools in its source code on 27 Oct 2026. 11 only read. The rest can change things, so keep your app's "ask before each tool call" setting on for them.

How we tested it: Tool list read from the source of nx-console (commit ea96f10), since most tools only appear inside an Nx workspace. Six workspace tools are hidden unless you pass --no-minimal, and the three CI tools need Nx Cloud.

Changes things2 tools · Can create, edit, send or delete.

ToolWhat it is for
nx_visualize_graphOpens the project or task graph in your editor. Needs Nx Console.
update_self_healing_fixApplies, rejects or reruns a fix Nx Cloud proposed for a failed run.

How do I install Nx MCP?

Install steps from the Nx MCP README

The project's own instructions, copied from its README on GitHub on 27 Oct 2026 under its MIT licence. They are the source of truth; the ready-made configs further down are built from them. The rest of the README is in the README tab.

Installation and Usage

There are two ways to use this MCP server:

a) Run it via the nx-mcp package

Simply invoke the MCP server via npx or your package manager's equivalent.

Here's an example of a mcp.json configuration:

{
  "servers": {
    "nx-mcp": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["nx-mcp@latest"]
    }
  }
}
Claude Code
claude mcp add nx-mcp npx nx-mcp@latest
VSCode
code --add-mcp '{"name":"nx-mcp","command":"npx","args":["nx-mcp"]}'
Warp

Go to Settings -> AI -> Manage MCP Servers -> + Add to add an MCP Server.

Alternatively, use the slash command /add-mcp in the Warp Agent prompt.

{
  "nx-mcp": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["nx-mcp@latest"]
  }
}

Refer to your AI tool's documentation for how to register an MCP server. For example, Cursor or Claude Desktop support MCP.

If you want to host the server instead of communicating via stdio, use --transport http and optionally --port (default 9921). Clients connect to http://localhost:<port>/mcp using the Streamable HTTP transport. It supports multiple concurrent connections, allowing different clients to connect simultaneously with independent sessions. The deprecated SSE transport (--sse, --transport sse) has been removed.

Run nx-mcp --help to see what options are available.

b) Use the Nx Console extension

If you're using Cursor you can directly install the Nx Console extension which automatically manages the MCP server for you.

More info:

What you need first

  • Node.js
  • An Nx workspace (Nx 15 or newer)
  • Nx Cloud, for the CI tools

Add Nx MCP to your app

Pick your app for a ready-to-paste snippet and where it goes, built from the steps above.

Where it goes: Your terminal, in the project folder

Claude Code
claude mcp add nx -- npx nx-mcp@latest /path/to/your/workspace

The Nx README's shorter form, claude mcp add nx-mcp npx nx-mcp@latest, works from the workspace folder. Add --no-minimal at the end for the project and generator tools.

The path tells the server which workspace to read; without it, it uses the folder the client starts in. Add "--no-minimal" to turn on the workspace, project and generator tools. In VS Code or Cursor, the Nx Console extension can set this up for you.

Checked against the project's own install docs on 27 Oct 2026: github.com/nrwl/nx-console/blob/master/apps/nx-mcp/README.md, nx.dev/docs/features/enhance-ai.

Nx MCP not working? Common fixes

Only nx_docs and nx_available_plugins appear
The server did not find a workspace. Pass the workspace path as the first argument.
Generator and project tools are missing
That is minimal mode. Add --no-minimal.
The CI tools are missing
They need the workspace to be connected to Nx Cloud.
nx_visualize_graph does nothing
It needs VS Code or a JetBrains IDE open with Nx Console installed.

How do I configure Nx MCP?

Names are exactly as the project spells them. Required ones are marked.

SettingWhat it does
workspace pathCommand line flagThe first argument: the Nx workspace to read. Defaults to the folder the client starts in./Users/you/code/my-repo
--no-minimalCommand line flagTurns on the workspace, project and generator tools that minimal mode hides.
--toolsCommand line flagOnly load matching tools. Patterns and ! exclusions work.--tools "nx_docs" "!ci_*"
--transportCommand line flaghttp serves the server on a port (9921 by default, set with --port) so several clients can share it.--transport http --port 9921
--disableTelemetryCommand line flagTurns off usage telemetry.
.nx/nx-mcp-config.jsonConfigThe same options as a file in the workspace root, for when an editor starts the server for you. Command-line flags win.

Nx MCP FAQ

How do I add Nx MCP to Claude Code?

From your workspace folder run claude mcp add nx-mcp npx nx-mcp@latest. Add the workspace path if you start Claude elsewhere, and --no-minimal for the project and generator tools.

How do I use Nx MCP in Cursor or VS Code?

Install the Nx Console extension, which sets the server up for you, or add an entry that runs npx nx-mcp@latest. In VS Code you can also use code --add-mcp with that command.

Do I need Nx Console?

No. npx nx-mcp works on its own. Nx Console only sets it up in VS Code, Cursor and JetBrains, and it is needed for graph visualisation.

Why is Nx MCP minimal mode the default?

Many coding agents learn about the workspace through Nx skills, so the Nx team hides the overlapping workspace tools to save context. --no-minimal brings them back.

Does it run builds or tests for me?

No. It reads the tasks you already have running and their output, and the model can suggest commands, but it does not start builds itself.

What do the Nx Cloud tools do?

With Nx Cloud connected, the assistant can read CI pipeline results and failed task logs, and act on self-healing fix suggestions.

Does Nx MCP work with ChatGPT?

Not as set up here. It reads a workspace on your machine, and ChatGPT only connects to servers by public URL. Its HTTP mode on port 9921 is meant for local clients.

Is Nx MCP free?

The server is free under the MIT licence. Nx Cloud, which the CI tools need, has its own plans.

Nx MCP README

Nx MCP Server

A Model Context Protocol server implementation for Nx.

Overview

The Nx MCP server gives LLMs deep access to your monorepo’s structure: project relationships, file mappings, runnable tasks, ownership info, tech stacks, Nx generators, and even Nx documentation. With this context, LLMs can generate code tailored to your stack, understand the impact of a change, and apply modifications across connected files with precision. This is possible because Nx already understands the higher-level architecture of your workspace, and monorepos bring all relevant projects into one place.

More info:

Minimal Mode (Default)

By default, the Nx MCP server runs in minimal mode, which hides workspace analysis tools that overlap with AI tool skills/instructions. This reduces tool clutter and context window usage for AI agents that already have access to equivalent functionality through skills.

The following tools are hidden in minimal mode:

  • nx_available_plugins
  • nx_workspace_path
  • nx_workspace
  • nx_project_details
  • nx_generators
  • nx_generator_schema

To disable minimal mode and expose all tools, use the --no-minimal flag:

npx nx-mcp@latest --no-minimal

Available Tools

The Nx MCP server provides a comprehensive set of tools for interacting with your Nx workspace.

Always Available
  • nx_docs: Returns documentation sections relevant to user queries about Nx
  • nx_current_running_tasks_details: Lists currently running Nx TUI processes and task statuses
  • nx_current_running_task_output: Returns terminal output for specific running tasks
  • nx_visualize_graph: Visualizes the Nx graph (requires running IDE instance)
Hidden in Minimal Mode (use --no-minimal to enable)
  • nx_available_plugins: Lists available Nx plugins from the core team and local workspace plugins
  • nx_workspace_path: Returns the path to the Nx workspace root
  • nx_workspace: Returns readable representation of project graph and nx.json configuration
  • nx_project_details: Returns complete project configuration in JSON format for a given project
  • nx_generators: Returns list of generators relevant to user queries
  • nx_generator_schema: Returns detailed JSON schema for a specific Nx generator
Nx Cloud Tools (only available w/ Nx Cloud enabled)

These tools provide insights and interactions with your Nx Cloud CI/CD data:

  • ci_information: Retrieves CI pipeline execution information for the current branch or a specific Nx Cloud URL. Returns failed tasks with runId metadata and supports a select parameter for field selection with pagination.
  • ci_task_output: Retrieves terminal output for a specific failed CI task, using a runId from ci_information or resolving it from the branch / URL context.
  • update_self_healing_fix: Apply, reject, or request a rerun for a self-healing CI fix from Nx Cloud

When no workspace path is specified, only the nx_docs and nx_available_plugins tools will be available.

Available Resources

When connected to an Nx Cloud-enabled workspace, the Nx MCP server automatically exposes recent CI Pipeline Executions (CIPEs) as MCP resources. Resources appear in your AI tool's resource picker, allowing the LLM to access detailed information about CI runs including failed tasks, terminal output, and affected files.

Contributing & Development

Contributions are welcome! Please see the Nx Console contribution guide for more details.

The basic steps are:

  1. Clone the Nx Console repository and follow installation steps
  2. Build the nx-mcp using nx run nx-mcp:build (or nx run nx-mcp:build:debug for debugging with source maps)
  3. Use the MCP Inspector to test out your changes

Configuration File

You can also configure the MCP server via a JSON file at .nx/nx-mcp-config.json in your workspace root. This is useful when the MCP server binary is managed by a plugin or extension where you can't pass CLI args directly.

{
  "tools": ["nx_docs", "!cloud_*"],
  "minimal": true,
  "debugLogs": false,
  "disableTelemetry": true,
  "transport": "http",
  "port": 9922
}

All keys are optional and match the CLI option names. CLI arguments take precedence over config file values.
