This Month's Harvest

October 2026

By Sophie Filer · 27 Oct 2026

October is the first harvest: the whole shelf went up this month, so this report covers every server on it rather than only the newcomers. From next month it tracks what changed.

Two findings stood out while we tested. Several popular servers are listed elsewhere under package names that belong to someone else, and most servers still do not tell your app which of their tools change things. Both are below, with the servers named.

Fresh from the Community: 36 servers sent in by their makers were written up on the community page. They join the shelf once they pass our install check.

What our install test found

For every server that runs without an account, we started the exact config we publish and asked it for its tool list. 48 of 60 started and answered. 11 need an account, a key or an app before they can start, so we checked their package instead. 1 could not be run here.

Package names that point somewhere else

21 servers are commonly listed under an npm or PyPI name that does not belong to the project. Install those names and you get someone else's code. Our pages use the real package:

What the tools can do

Of the 1,474 tools across the shelf, 724 (49%) only read, 712 (48%) can change something, and 38 run commands or code. 13 servers only read, so they are the safest to leave on without approvals.

Do the tools say when they change things?

MCP lets a tool mark itself read-only or destructive, so your app can skip the prompt for safe calls and ask before risky ones. Of the 52 servers whose tool list we could read in full, 35 label every tool, 2 label some, and 15 label none. For those, keep approvals on in your app.

How much context each server costs

Every tool's name and description is sent to the model in each conversation. Our floor estimate (names, descriptions and input names, about four characters a token) ranges from 100 to 22,800 tokens.

Heaviest tool lists

KiCad MCP~22,800 tokens
Desktop Commander~10,800 tokens
MCP for Unity~10,200 tokens
MCP Atlassian (Jira and Confluence)~7,800 tokens
Grafana MCP~6,800 tokens

Lightest tool lists

DBHub~100 tokens
Framelink Figma MCP~100 tokens
Exa~300 tokens
Tavily MCP~400 tokens
shadcn/ui MCP~400 tokens

Every number here comes from our own runs and checks. The raw figures are at /harvest/2026-10/data.json. See how we pick and check servers.
